Applying for the F-1 Student Visa

Step 1

Submit the following documents:

  1. completed application
  2. Web Entrance Test (for Intial and Change of Status applicants only)
  3. copy of passport
  4. copy of bank statement
  5. letter of financial support(if sponsor needed)

Pay the following fees:

  1. $200 non-refundable application fee
  2. $250 non-refundable processing fee (for Change of Status applicants only)
  3. $300 non-refundable processing fee (for Reinstatement applicants only)
  4. $120 non-refundable document mailing fee (optional)
  5. $25 non-refundable wire transfer fee (if applicable, for wire transfer processing/outside of the US payments)

Step 2

Receive your I-20 and acceptance documents and make an appointment for your visa interview:

  1. visit www.usembassy.gov to find the closest U.S. Embassy or Consulate
  2. pay your SEVIS fee online at www.fmjfee.com ($350)
  3. complete the DS-160 non-immigrant visa application ($185)

Step 3

On the day of your interview, you should bring the following documents:

  1. I-20 and acceptance letter from BIA
  2. DS-160 barcode confirmation page
  3. passport
  4. receipts for DS-160 visa application and SEVIS fee payment
  5. copy of bank statement
  6. letter of financial support (if applicable)
  7. 2 copies of a 2 in. x 2 in. (50.8 mm x 50.8 mm) passport photo
